1940s
Like the rest of the world, San Francisco's attention was focused on World War II during the first half of the 1940s. The United Nations Conference took place in San Francisco in 1945. By the end of the decade, the Army was decommissioning guns at Fort Funston and barracks at the Civic Center. Meanwhile, trolleys began replacing streetcars.
