Skidmore, Owings and Merrill

Founded in Chicago in 1936, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill opened their San Francisco office ten years later. They've designed landmark buildings around the world, including the Shaklee Building, the Qantas Building, and the Alcoa Building in San Francisco.

Men Who Made San Francisco: Sylvain Schnaittacher

Sylvain Schnaittacher, architect by profession, is a native of San Francisco, and was born November 30, 1874. He graduated from Boys High School and attended the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, after which he received five years' office training, from 1891 to 1896, in the office of the late A. Page Brown.

Charles McKim was a founding partner of McKim, Mead, and White. His Beaux-Arts buildings - especially his notable New York City works - made him one of the most celebrated architects of the late 1800s.
